netaji subhas bose CENTRE FOR RESEARCH & STUDIES IN NATIONAL MOVEMENT AND NATIONAL INTEGRATION

Of the many activities envisaged by the University, one of the most relevant was one that advocated for a dedicated Centre devoted to the great son of India, Subhas Chandra Bose, known as Netaji, be set up within the University. Netaji has been a great source of inspiration to the people of the region having grown up, worked and fought in the region. His historic efforts to free the motherland, his call to Delhi and the battles fought and lost by a poorly equipped, yet patriotic army named as the Indian National Army (INA) are one of the great moments in modern history. The INA derived its support from the people of Assam, and therefore, the need for extending recognition to this unique and lone warrior and a valiant soldier for freedom.

The proposal to the Department of Education (MHRD), as well as the UGC, was approved enthusiastically and the centre came into being on 23 January 1998, Netaji's birth anniversary. Presently the centre is manned by a visiting fellow and there are plans to appoint a permanent Director together with support staff to enable the centre to carry out research into the contributions made by Netaji.

A Subhas Bose Museum and Library is also planned and a commemorative volume illustrating his advances and battles in the regions around Imphal and Kohima are also under consideration.

The University is also working on a thematic project together with some other departments prepare an interactive CD-ROM on Netaji, to help preserve the slowly fading memories of his valiant struggle for freedom as a befitting and lasting tribute to a great son of India.
